White on black

Drawing or painting on black

The first time I drew on black with white, I made the sketch of Ronny Turiaf. I wanted to experiment with drawing and painting white on black. This practice is rooted in my relationship with light, which for me embodies a divine and mystical force. To have to concentrate on the light to make a face appear with its features, its details, its relief has for me something at the same time mystical and appeasing. Symbolically, to make a face appear in or on the dark is to light a star, it is to fill a cosmic void, it is to intentionally redirect the light, it is to choose to concentrate on clarity, while dealing with the shadows. It is an expression of the duality inherent in all things. I feel hopeful and positive when I work with this process.
