"One way to identity is a virtual exhibition presenting the figurative series "Identity" for the first time. Drawing on her mastery of digital art, Lauwaart illustrates portraits of women, particularly black women, whose representations she wishes to reinvent, which she considers normalized. Marked by a profound period of introspection, in 2018 she initiated this pictorial ensemble that will highlight states of mind: the quest for self, the relationship with others, identity. Broad flat tints of color delimit visible and non-visible spaces, creating a contrast between what we can actually see of the other and the imaginary thoughts we project onto them. This exhibition encourages meditative contemplation of female portraits, allowing us to take the time to reflect on ourselves.
The Identity series is composed of seven works "Introduction", "Acceptance", "Peace" and "One". Through the figuration of these segmented, framed, intimate portraits of women, it is a progressive dive into our psyche that is suggested. The artist expresses her own philosophical questionings, her commitments and her relationship to the other who is nothing more than myself. This is why you, the visitors, will be led to answer these same questions during the exhibition.

Introductory portrait of the project, "Introduction" was born in 2018 as the artist began a period of deep questioning. The contrasting skin tone of the model is hidden by an erubescent, bloody, vivid flatness. This painting embodies the (re)birth, the beginning of a new stage of life. This one can take shape in the pain, the tearing but proves to be fundamental for the construction of the self. Represented by three white lines painted on the woman's neck, this rebirth touches the soul, the spirit, the body. It is a return to oneself, this questioning of identity is perpetual and gives us to meditate on this question: Who am I?

A framed look, soft but confident. This portrait illustrates a significant exception in the "Identity" series, in which the artist has made the choice to offer this gaze to whoever is willing to hold onto it. Representing and reinterpreting the usual representations of black women in art is an issue for the artist. The symbols of identity such as the Afro, the body paintings renew a dialogue with a contemporary black history of protest, rooted and committed. That of the Black Panthers, Angela Davis, Nina Simone ... True symbols of strength, of struggle against racism and its system. It is about taking the backlash by reaffirming that self-acceptance is a key: My hair is as it is, I do not need to change its nature, I accept it. This clairvoyance touches the being who must know himself, see himself fully. This questioning resonates with Lauwaart's artistic choices which favor symbolic and elemental colors. For a call to introspection and tranquility, the color of the goddess Yemanja, protector of women in Yoruba mythology. Yellow, the dominant surface that masks and questions, reaffirms the quest and acceptance of self by embodying knowledge, light, truth, and the sun in a universal way.

Inhale. Breathe out. Deeply.
Peace, Paix, Pé. It's this permanent quest that we all carry within us that is depicted here. A veritable leitmotif of our contemporary times, the quest for "inner peace" has almost become a commercial commodity. Lauwaart takes us ever further in our quest for the self. For her, peace is above all liberation. A letting go that is expressed in this woman's calm expression. The white marks on her face illustrate this feeling, celebrating the peace she has found through tears. The choice of solid colors represents a return to nature, to the earth, and is rooted in the artist's love of cultivating her plants. Peace" is a glimpse of what can be gained by making peace with oneself, others and one's environment.

An important work, it was thought to be the final element of the Identity series in 2018. The portrait of this woman embodies the clairvoyance of consciousness and refers to a mystical force. The red lines, a link between the past and the present, echo the work "Introduction", adorn the body and lead us to the knowledge of ourselves. The consciousness of the other. He is me, and I am him. We are only one. It is a return to a lost unity, to a balance. It is the only representation of an Asian woman. It is the exploration of other universes, of faces which seem to him not ordinary, by refusing a standardized representation of what must be the beauty in a globalized world.
